I.T. SECURITY: 5 THINGS TO DO WHEN SOMEONE GETS FIRED

Whenever someone unceremoniously leaves an organization, there’s a few best practices the I.T. team should take

1. Exit Interview

Although not I.T. or security related, exit interviews can provide invaluable insight. During an exit interview the employer can gain information about why the employee is leaving. If the employee is a valuable asset, the exit interview can be used as a last ditch effort to try to persuade the employee to stay. If the employee has been fired no exit interview is needed. The employer knows exactly why the company and the employee are going their separate ways.

2. ESCORT THEM OUT THE BUILDING

Ensure the individual whose been fired is escorted out of the building. Once the individual has been given notice, they should not be allowed anywhere unsupervised. This is to reduce any damage that can be done by the terminated employee. Extra precautions should be taken if the terminated employee was on the I.T. team.

3. REVOKE ALL ACCESS

All access the terminated employee had needs to be revoked immediately. This means all badges, key cards and physical keys need to be taken away from the employee.

4. CHANGE ALL PASSWORDS AND LOCKS

You also need to take away all permissions the employee had on your companies network. Passwords that the employee had access to must be changed and physical locks must be changed.

5. DISABLE AND DELETE ACCOUNTS

Ensure that all network and email accounts are disabled. You should not delete the accounts right away. If the employee was terminated the accounts may hold important details. If there is an ongoing investigation the information held within these accounts will most likely be needed.
